Hedenstugan's

History

A house with a long history

Hedenstugan has a long and unusual history.

The building you see today was originally used as a poorhouse. It is not known exactly when the first part of the house was built, but over time it came to play an important role in the local community.

In 1860, during a period when tuberculosis affected the region severely, the house was expanded and used as a sanatorium for patients in the early stages of the disease.

From care home to family home

The building continued to serve as a hospital until the 1930s. After that, it was rebuilt and divided into apartments, becoming home to several families.

A small detail from that time can still be seen today on one of the outside walls of the barn in the backyard, where the initials VS and HS are carved into the wood. They were left there by the brothers Valter and Harald Sjöberg, who lived here as children.

In the 1960s, the families moved out and the house became an office for MHF, a Swedish motorist organisation. For a short period in the late 1970s, the building was also used as a kindergarten.

A new chapter for Hedenstugan

At the beginning of the 1980s, the local Hamrånge sports club took over the property and used it as a clubhouse for about twenty years.

In November 2012, we had the opportunity to buy the property. After around 150 years of wear, we began restoring the house with great care, both inside and out. Our aim was to preserve the character of the building while giving it a new life.

Today, Hedenstugan is a small B&B hotel with seven individually decorated rooms in a quiet setting near forest, coast and nature. Its long history is still part of the atmosphere, but now in a calmer and more welcoming way.

Since 1860, this house has served many purposes. Today, it welcomes guests looking for peace, nature and a personal stay in Gästrikland.
